What is your full name? Ashleigh Sue-Marie Powell.

Do you know why you got named this beautiful name? My mum always liked unusual names and boys names for girls. Then when she was watching the Bold & the Beautiful, there was an actress named Ashleigh. I am pretty sure that’s when she decided as she loved the spelling, and my dad is traditional and liks to carry on family names. With his brother’s middle name Ashley, he was happy and agreed. My middle name is after my Dad’s only sister Susan, and his great-aunt, Marie.

What were the first three things you did when you woke up today? Checked my phone, made a green tea and turned on my laptop.

What are you wearing? Blue Levi skinny jeans, brown ankle boots which I just bought from Apex in Paddington, green and white knit I got from Chapel st, Melbourne, black blazer I got in NYC, woolen black scarf also from Melbourne and my black bandit gloves.

What was your dream job as a kid? When I was little I always wanted to be an actress. However, I loved the Teenage Mutant Turtles and Barbies, so I wanted to combine both and be an actress who was pretty and could fight the bad guys.

What are you working as now? I am currently working on my first book Katana, which is based on my grandfather´s time in WWII. I also work as a Financial Planner.

How would you explain that to a child? Ahhh I have never thought or had to do that. Ummm I guess I would open a childrens book, point to the text and say “I put these words on a page but in a different book”. Then I would get a dollar coin, and say I look after this dollar for people and try and make it into two for them.

Explain what Axel & Ash is. To me Axel & Ash is two people who love life who one day shared their individual dreams, and now achieving some of them together by producing beautiful and unique books that capture the wonderful things in life, which hopefully others love as much as we do.

What is your role at Axel & Ash? mmmm I think I have several roles at Axel & Ash, as when your starting a business there is an impeccable amount to do, so I can’t define it to one role. However, overall I think my job is to just be myself and contribute my ideas, thoughts and skills what I have learnt so far and will continue to learn along the way.

Why do you believe it will be successful? Because we are so passionate about what we are doing, and we really love creating this. Also I think which is important, we are not afraid to dream big and just go for it.

What living person do you most admire? My mum.

You are such a positive and energetic woman! Where do you get your energy from? Wow, that’s a lovely compliment, not sure it’s entirely true. I think there is so much I want to do and achieve in this world, most of the time I feel I don’t have enough hours in the day. I guess I keep occupied on the things that are fullfilling and kind. I try not to be bothered by bad things that occur, as most the time you can’t control what happens and it takes alot of energy to be in a bad mood, and you can’t think correctly. I guess I just know there are so many beautiful things in life that you can be doing and focusing on, then the negative.

Why? I love Tom Ford’s classic style, and the fact he is extremely talented not only as a fashion designer but also as a film director. Then when I met him in New York, I completely fell in love with him. His personality was incredibly open and warm. His coral lipstick is one of my essentials. I love Yves Saint Laurent because of the blend of bright colours and creative patterns he used. He always went outside the tradition, yet still having that unique classic style. At age 21 he was the head designer of Dior, then he took the chance to go out on his own. I really admire the risks he took, and I think that alone speaks for itself.

Who is your styleicon? Kirsten Dunst, Alexa Chung, Kate Moss and Marion Cotillard.

Share with me your favorite secret spot in Sydney? There is a monument with a water fountain in the Botanic gardens when you enter via  Macquarie street (across from the library). I would sit by this monument on as many lunch breaks as I could –  to read, stretch on the soft green grass, listen to the fountain, and admire the view of Sydney harbour. Then one day, I was really down and I went there to clear my head. That day for the first time I actually read the monument and realised the date it was unveiled, 22nd June 1897. It was the same day as my birthday. From then on, I felt I found my spot in the world.
