EASTER ADVENTURES: Surf City
Our junior writer Jordyn Christensen takes off to Bells…..
As we find ourselves at the tail end of March once again, we reluctantly send summer off with a final wave. With that being said, there’s something strangely refreshing about the inevitable April rain… and what better way to embrace the change of season than head twelve hours south to SURF CITY, Torquay, Victoria.
After the painful but inevitable traffic route that is getting out of Sydney on the Thursday night of the Easter long weekend, we were on our way…and while twenty six hours of driving in four days doesn’t seem particularly appealing, when you’ve got your best friend, R Kelly, and the promise of some killer waves on the other end, how could you possibly say no!
The Ripcurl Pro was calling our names, to fan girl over the best surfers in the world, tackling one of the best breaks in the country. The longest running professional surf event had just hit 55 years old and was every bit as exciting as our little hearts could take. Being one of the most iconic events of the World Championship Tour for good reason, waves 6 – 10ft and offshore, known to those in the business as being “one and a half over head” made the perfect conditions for all the carving and shredding we could possibly hope for. We watched in awe from the beach, amongst hundreds of others, all for a glimpse of our favourite athletes and if we were lucky a high five or an autograph as they came out of the water after their heats.
We tensely awaited the judges scores to see who would be heading onto the next round and escape elimination. With Aussie favourites Julian Wilson, Mick Fanning and current world number one: Matt Wilkinson all through to the quarter finals it became harder and harder to bear the thought of driving back to Sydney at the end of the long weekend, with a week of competition still to go ahead.
Time moves slower outside of the daily grind, but with competition this hot it was also somehow gone in the blink of an eye. And while there are few things more iconic than an Australian summer, an Aussie easter in Victoria comes pretty dang close… especially when you find yourself walking to your car next to Julian Wilson at the end of a competition day [queue boyfriend hyperventilating with excitement]. But all’s well that ends well with a fairytale finish, Aussie Matt Wilkinson taking out his second event of the year and holding onto the coveted yellow (number one) jersey… and while watching the final on TV didn’t quite have the same energy, we’re stoked nonetheless.
Love you Sydney, but take me back to Bells.
One Wave is all it Takes 3rd Birthday Celebrations
For most 3rd birthday celebrations there are a few things that are guaranteed inclusions. Fun, colour, smiles, photos, getting down and messy, and an amazingly awesome birthday boy or girl who is super excited in the attention of the party. One Waves third birthday party, shared the birthday love and excitement from just one individual to every single participant who attended the worldwide event.
One Wave is all it Takes is the inspirational organisation that tackles mental health and awareness in a totally different way than the normal medically structured approach. It’s the brainchild of Grant Trebilco and Sam Schumacher and the premise is simple: Turn up to the beach on a friday morning in some fluro clothes and get out in the water for a surf together. The fluro is an act of defiance, and also a way to bring attention to the cause. Grant and Sam want to ensure that the participants know that mental health is nothing to be ashamed of and instead be proud of being part of this group. For those who cannot surf, there is yoga on the beach or the simple connection and companionship of having someone who knows what you are going through. Through the simple recipe of salt, sand and surf these gents have transformed a simple idea into one that is now practised at over 50 beaches worldwide. A community of individuals who have a very real connection with each other.
To ensure their 3rd birthday meeting was one that would not soon be forgotten, they proposed to make the biggest human wave along the beach. So just after sunrise on a cool friday morning in March, a daisy chain of brightly coloured individuals snaked along Bondi beach. With long silhouetted shadows creating a gorgeous reflection of the excitement and community of the event, they were only overshadowed by the eclectic brightness of the fluro outfits, some which eclipsed the sunlight with their radiance. Once everyone was in position a Mexican wave of sorts was created with the help of a megaphone and a Bondi surf rescue buggy to rally the troops. It was an amazing sight that had the many Bondi early morning joggers, fitness fanatics and walkers stopping in their tracks to gaze at the sight.
The Axel and Ash team were privileged enough to be part of this great event and wish the One Wave is all it Takes team a very happy 3rd birthday.
As 80’s kids we couldn’t be ANY more excited to hear that the ‘Friends’ cast was getting together on a NBC special last week for a James Burrows (director) tribute! Unfortunately Chandler couldn’t make it but seeing these guys together on a couch again just brings back us to our teenage years…

Public Speaking – TICK
Last weekend, we got up in front of a crowd of like-minded creatives to share our incredible journey of starting a creative business.
When Olivia from Don’t tell Summer approached us to be part of their epic motivational speaker line up at her event Rad Livin, we were honoured, excited – and a whole big bundle of nerves! Hosting this event also happened to be one of Olivia’s big Bucket list ticks, so we of course said a big fat yes to being part of the day (I mean, c’mon – how often do you get to be part of someone’s bucket list dreams?!).
Rad livin’ was such a unique event: Picture a fun, inspiring conference, mixed with laid-back festival feels, packed with inspiring creatives and successful entrepreneurs sharing their dreams and stories. Add live music, collaborative spaces, good vibes, an open bar, and a donut cart (yep, an entire cart full of sugary goodness!) and you have a recipe for a memorable day. The event was designed to inspire budding creatives to live their dreams now – and it definitely delivered that and more.
The day bought together down-to-earth, successful speakers who are doing what they love and passionate about inspiring other’s to do the same. We heard stripped-back stories about chasing dreams – the ups, the downs, the good and the rewarding. Although we were both jittery before we got up there (thinking we’d be sweating bullets and jumbling our words), the amazing crowd made it a fun and a super relaxed experience. We loved hearing the stories of the other speakers and to get approached and told that our story has touched and inspired another person (let alone a whole room of amazing humans) was so deeply humbling.
The highlight of both our days was simply being surrounded by so many like-minded souls, curious to know our story and to collaborate, dream and share ideas – whether it was listening to a fellow entrepreneur’s journey, having a D&M with young budding artist or sharing the tips needed to inspire the eager dreamers to become doers!
In a world that throws out inspiration everywhere – which is what makes it so magical – being in a space that brings it all to life was truly incredible.

FAB FIT FUN Interview
We still have holiday hangover blues from our big Roadtrip across the U.S.A! From Hawaii in the West to New York in the East, we crossed the country in 7 different cars. From adventuring in an open Jeep, to getting windblown in a Mustang and living like a turtle with the house on our back in a big RV – it was certainly an adventure of a lifetime! We chatted with Fab Fit Fun about all the magic it entailed and all our favourites along the way!
Check out our interview below and pick up some tips for your own adventure!
NA PALI COAST
Have you ever looked at something so beautiful and wondered, “How is this real?” Well, that’s exactly the feeling you get as soon as you step onto this magical island Kaua’i.
This tropical island is the greenest and most luscious place we’ve ever seen! The island gathers the most rainfall than anywhere else in the world, which means everything grows naturally bigger than usual and with colours so vibrant, it’s like you’re watching Jurassic Park all over again (it was filmed here!). With it’s volcanic craters and tropical waterfall covered mountain ranges, you will find tonnes of hikes and trails with majestic views, just like this – the Na Pali Coast…
Voted as one of the most beautiful and dangerous coastal treks in the world, we found ourselves on the Na Pali Coast, because it was on one of our close friends’ Bucketlist; the very same friend who suggested we go to Hawai’i first before we headed to the mainland for our big road trip tour. It obviously didn’t take too much convincing to get us here. The thought of being able to tick off one of our best friends’ bucketlist items = priceless!
Days before flying into Kauai, people told us that after the big hurricanes and massive rain, the trek will be closed and too dangerous to trek.. what could be so bad we asked everyone? Well, we had to at least try! On our second day on the island the sun was peaking through the clouds so we set off north to Hanalei to complete this bucketlist item!
Halfway there, we saw the cutest Hawaiian 18 year old surfer hitch-hiking so we made space for him and he ended up being the coolest dude and we fast became friends. He was on his way to go spearfishing but knowing the whole island like the back of his hand he happily changed plans and said he said he’ll take us on our trek instead! Perfect – what we needed was a real local adventurer! We named him Mowgli!
So we arrive at the gates – which were closed, but Mowgli just said, “No worries, we’ll be fine.” If Mowgli says so, we trust him, so off we went. Mowgli was of course barefoot – Hawaii style – so Axel thought, “Why not do it the real way, feeling the earth beneath us?!” so off she went, barefoot!
The hike cannot be explained as it has to be experienced, but we had an absolutley magical day. Mowgli was more like Baloo – our protective bear who told us all he knew about the jungle and land. He found springwater sources for us; he used a leaf as a funnel to pour water into our waterbottles, he found guava trees and climbed up to get the best fruit from the top for us, and with Axel being barefoot he patiently waited every step of the way and was always there with a helping hand through the super slippery muddy parts (like 50%)! He entertained us with stories of his upbringing for the entirety of the trek! How cool is it that his mum is Pierce Brosnan’s housekeeper and he himself, is a private chef hand – on the path to becoming a masterchef! He just cooked for Ben Stiller for a whole week on the island.
We stopped at the beach and hung out in the caves before coming to the amazing massive main waterfall where we swam and for showered by it’s massive powers. It was all just incredible and we ended up having a bit too much fun… and being a bit optimistic about the time this meant we ended up walking back in complete darkness, which was an adventure in itself! But, with Mowgli we felt safe and weren’t scared for a moment. And, thanks to him, we got to expirience the most beautiful sunset on the Na Pa Li Coast – an incredible sight.
After 8 hours of sweaty walking in full sun (it never ended up raining), we were so excited to reach the beach and feeling like jungle animals ourselves, we stripped all our clothes off and ran into the lukewarm water. Surrounded by massive rainforest cliffs on each side, basking in the light from a shining moon we just floated there and watched the incredible shooting stars in silence.
No pictures or words can live up to what we experienced this day, but here is our attempt to show the beauty we explored…
